Trio of New No. 1 Teams in Latest NCAA DII Regional Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – Three new regional No. 1s emerged in the fourth regular-season edition of the NCAA Division II Cross Country Regional Rankings, announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Colorado Mines’ men wrested the top spot in the South Central from three-time defending national team champion Adams State, while the Saint Leo men and Bloomsburg women moved atop their respective regions.

A decisive victory in the college division of the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival – 44-125 over Central No. 2 Pittsburg State – was enough to boost the Miners atop the South Central for the first time in the history of the USTFCCCA archives (dating back to 2010).

This marks just the third time in that same span that Adams State has not been No. 1 in the region.

Saint Leo supplanted Lee (Tenn.) as the top squad in the South Region. The former finished 22nd at the Lehigh Paul Short Run’s top-seeded Gold Division, while the latter was ninth in the Blue race at the Greater Louisville Classic (the second race).

Bloomsburg was the lone new women’s No. 1 after the Huskies won the Brown Division II/III race at Paul Short, displacing Edinboro from atop the Atlantic.

Another pair of women’s teams moved inside the “qualifying zone” in their regions based on this weekend’s action (each region is allotted a certain number of qualifiers to the NCAA Championships on November 21 in Joplin, Mo.).

Colorado Mines finished second in the college division at the Chile Pepper Festival to jump two spots to No. 3 in the four-bid South Central Region, while Harding finished fifth in the same race to jump up five spots to No. 5 in the five-bid Central.

Joining the men’s rankings this week were California (Pa.) [Atlantic Region], Saint Rose [East], Ferris State [Midwest], and CSU-Pueblo [South Central].

New to the women’s rankings were Lock Haven [Atlantic], Le Moyne and Adelphi [East], Ashland [Midwest], and Fort Lewis [South Central].

NCAA Division II Regional Championships will be held around the country on Saturday, November 7 with the NCAA Championships happening two weeks later in Joplin, Missouri, on November 21..

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams’ strength with current season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
