Last week North Central (Ill.) and SUNY Geneseo made history when they became the first men’s teams to share the top billing. It happened six years ago in the women’s poll when Calvin and Middlebury were co-No. 1’s in the preseason, but never again.

In the most recent poll, released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), voters pulled one first-place vote from the Cardinals and handed it to the Knights. That gave SUNY Geneseo five, compared to North Central (Ill.)’s three and a two-point lead overall.

We could see even more separation after this weekend — or a swing in the other direction — as both the Cardinals and Knights travel to high-profile meets. North Central (Ill.) takes part in the Kollege Town Sports Invitational hosted by UW-Oshkosh, while SUNY Geneseo is headed to the Inter-Regional Border Battle hosted by Rowan.

The top-ranked Knights will be one of nine ranked teams in Glassboro, New Jersey on Saturday. SUNY Geneseo will be joined by fifth-ranked MIT, 11th-ranked RPI, 13th-ranked St. Lawrence, 18th-ranked NYU, 20th-ranked Haverford, 21st-ranked Johns Hopkins, 25th-ranked Emory and 34th-ranked Allegheny (Pa.).

Over in Winneconne, Wisconsin on the same site as the 2015 NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships and the 2016 NCAA DIII Midwest Regional Championships, the second-ranked Cardinals face a tall order. North Central (Ill.) takes on fourth-ranked and defending national champion UW-Eau Claire, 15th-ranked Washington (Mo.) and 18th-ranked Calvin, among others.

Another meet to keep an eye on this weekend featuring ranked teams is the Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational hosted by UW-La Crosse. The sixth-ranked Eagles welcome a plethora of teams to Ettrick Golf Club, of which is headlined by 12th-ranked St. Olaf (down one spot from last week).

Don’t forget about the Little III Championship — featuring a battle between No. 3 Williams and No. 8 Amherst — or the Inter-Regional Rumble (not to be confused with the Inter-Regional Border Battle) — which brings together a number of teams from the Central Region and Great Lakes Region.

This is shaping up to be the biggest weekend of NCAA DIII Cross Country this season. It won’t hold a candle to the weekends of November 12 or November 19 as those will be the NCAA Division III Regional Championships and NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, respectively.
