Changes Galore In Top-25 DI Women’s Team Rankings

NEW ORLEANS — A big weekend in the world of collegiate track and field propelled a slew of NCAA Division I women’s teams into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Computer Rankings on Monday.

Of the 25 teams in the fourth week of the rankings, seven women’s teams rose in the top-25 in the rankings, while nine teams broke into the rankings from outside of the top-25 from a week ago.

This week’s computer rankings strictly involve marks from the 2017 NCAA Division I Descending Order Lists, as opposed to previous weeks where marks from previous seasons were used until enough data on the current season could be collected.

The biggest jump on the week belonged to Texas A&M, who moved from 48th to 12th. Much of that can be attributed to sophomore Jazmine Fray, who broke the collegiate record in the 800 meters this past weekend at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational with a time of 2:00.69. Fray was also a part of the nation’s fastest 4 x 400 relay squad that posted a finish of 3:29.74. The ranking is the highest for the Aggies since the final week of the 2015 campaign.

Georgia rose to 2nd after sitting at 3rd in the four previous rankings, while LSU made its season-debut in the top-5 this week at 5th. Triple jumper Keturah Orji for the Bulldogs notched an NCAA Division I season best with a mark of 14.10m (46-3 ¼) at the Music City Challenge. The Tigers got eight top-10 performances in the NCAA Division I rankings over the weekend at the Tyson Invitational and Iowa State Classic, highlighted by junior Mikiah Brisco’s 60 hurdles run of 7.98 and her 60 meter time of 7.19, good for 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the Descending Order Lists.

Oregon remained on top as it has all season, with Hannah Cunliffe and Katie Rainsberger notching the top times in the 60 meters and 3,000 meters, respectively, in Division I this past weekend. Cunliffe’s mark of 7.07 broke the collegiate record in the 60 meters at the New Mexico Don Kirby Invitational, while Rainsberger’s time of 9:01.21 took over the Division I lead at the Husky Classic.

Arkansas (3rd) and Southern California (4th) remained in the top-5 from a week ago, while Kentucky (6th) stayed put. Texas (7th) jumped one spot from a week ago and were joined by Baylor (8th) and Alabama (9th) and Florida (10th) at the bottom of the top-10. Michigan (16th) and Notre Dame (NR) are fell out of the top-10 in this week’s rankings.

While the aforementioned Texas A&M Aggies had a nice jump in the polls, seven other teams saw double-digit increases in the rankings from week three to week four. Indiana (17th) saw its first top-25 ranking since the fourth week of the 2011 season, as well as its second-highest ranking ever, after moving up 24 spots. Stanford jumped to 10th from 28th after Vanessa Fraser’s 3,000 meter time of 9:04.78 at the Husky Classic, good for 5th in Division I.

Villanova cracked the top-20 for the first time since week seven of the 2011 campaign, as the Wildcats moved to 19th after a 21-spot jump. Siofra Clerigh Buttner ran the fifth-best time in the mile over the weekend in Division I this eyar, with a time of 4:33.16 t the Fastrack National Invite.

Furman, who was ranked 139th in the preseason poll, has continued to make a rise, as Robert Gary’s squad comes in at 20th this week for the program’s first ever top-25 ranking. Allie Buchalski, who owns the 2nd-fastest time in the 3,000 meters in Division I this season, posted the 3rd-best mark in the 5,000 meters on the year in Division I last weekend at the Iowa State Classic.

Also making big jumps in the rankings were Arizona (35th to 21st), Colorado (32nd to 22nd) and Mississippi State (52nd to 25th). Illinois also made its season debut in the top-25, coming in at 24th.
