NEW ORLEANS — Drastic shifts in the landscape of men’s track and field at the NCAA Division II level occurred during the 2nd week of team rankings, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday, with seven teams moving 10 or more spots in the top-25 in addition to three teams making their debuts in the rankings.
Chico State remains atop the leaderboard, but Ashland kicked off its outdoor campaign this past weekend, and in the process, entered the rankings at No. 2. The same can be said for Tiffin, who comes in at 7th this week after having just made its outdoor debut. Texas A&M-Commerce and Shorter each jumped four spots to 3rd and 4th, respectively, while Angelo State fell one to 5th.
Academy of Art was inactive this past weekend, forcing a four-spot drop to 6th, with Saint Augustine’s hot on their heels at 8th after a huge 22-spot leap. Texas A&M-Kingsville (9th) and Lee (Tenn.) (10th) are the remaining two squads in the top-10.

While Chico State came in at 1st once again, the Wildcats saw just one athlete post a top-20 NCAA Division II mark in Phill Bailey, who notched the 14th-best high jump mark at 2.00m (6-6¾) during the American River Invitational. With other teams revving up their outdoor campaigns, Chico State lost a shade over 100 points in the computer rankings from last week to now, and unfortunately for the Wildcats, no other team had a better week on the track than the program that now sits right behind them in the rankings.
Jud Logan has his men from Ashland hungry after finishing as runners-up at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, as the Eagles own 164.76 points to Chico State’s 180.35. Ashland was dormant on the outdoor track until this past weekend, but started its season with a bang.
USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Men’s Athlete of the Week Myles Pringle ran the fastest NCAA Division II mark on the year, as well as the fastest mark in the nation this past weekend, in the 400 meters at the Raleigh Relays, recording an Automatic Qualifying mark of 45.99. At the Weems Baskin Invitational, Daniel Roberts joined his teammate in posting an Automatic Qualifying mark, as his hammer throw of 67.97m (223-0) also ranks 1st in NCAA Division II on the year. The Eagles also had 10 other Provisional Qualifying marks set across both meets this past weekend.
Much like Ashland, Tiffin had a solid outing in its season debut. Coming off an NCAA Division II Indoor Championship season, the Dragons saw six Provisional Qualifying marks set, as well as two Automatic Qualifying marks. James Ngandu ran a 28:50.75 in the 10,000 meters for one Automatic Qualifying mark, while Coy Blair set the other one in the shot put with an NCAA Division II leading throw of 18.79m (61-7¾).

Saint Augustine sat in 30th during the 1st week of rankings after winning the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the past four seasons. But, it didn’t take them long to leap back into the scene, as Shaquille Dill posted an Automatic Qualifying mark in the 800 meters, posting the NCAA Division II’s top mark at 1:48.62 at the Weems Baskin Invitational. The Falcons also claimed the top 4×400 relay mark in NCAA Division II with a time of 3:09.53. Two triple jumpers in Jumonne Exeter and Taylor Eubanks posted top-10 marks, as did Shawn Rowe in the 400 meters.
Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Javier Lopez turned in the top 110 hurdles time in NCAA Division II this year at 14.03 during the Bobby Lane Invitational, and Lee (Tenn.) posted 4 top-10 marks at the Raleigh Relays and Tennessee Rust Buster meets this past weekend, including Christian Noble’s 3000 steeplechase mark of 9:02.34 – good for 2nd in NCA Division II.
Eastern New Mexico (5th to 11th), Azusa Pacific (9th to 22nd) and UC San Diego (3rd to 23rd) all dropped out of the top-10 from a week ago.
Mount Olive (16th), Johnson C. Smith (17th) and Slippery Rock (20th) all jumped double-digit spots in the rankings, while Shippensburg came in at 18th after having not been ranked a week ago due to having not started the season.
The 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from May 25-27. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org each week throughout the season for updated rankings.
