NEW ORLEANS – So far this year, the Adams State and West Texas A&M women’s indoor track & field squads have been on a roller coaster ride in the NCAA Division II National Team Rankings.

Consider this week one where the Grizzlies and Buffs are trending upwards.

Adams State moved seven spots up to second place, reclaiming its preseason ranking after falling as low as ninth a week ago, announced the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday. West Texas A&M, meanwhile, hit a new season-high with a third-place ranking after falling to 17th after the preseason poll.

The Grizzlies were outstanding at the Colorado Invitational last weekend, where its distance runners put on a show. Jenna Thurman set the new standard in NCAA Division II this year in the mile, hitting an Automatic Qualifying Mark of 4:41.32 (altitude adjusted), while Malena Grover and Eilish Flanagan recorded the third and fifth-best times in the 3000 on the season, respectively.

The Buffs of West Texas A&M returned to the top-five after sitting on the cusp a week ago in sixth. Senior star Rellie Kaputin got in on the action at the Texas Tech Open, posting the third-best long jump mark on the Descending Order List this year at 6.04m (19-9¾). Nele Heinrich’s 400 time of 55.68 also sits seventh on the season.

Grand Valley State remained in first on with some strong performances by the Lakers at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic. However, the week belonged to Rachael Walters, who headed to the Meyo Invitational. While there, the junior notched the fourth-best 800 time in NCAA Division II history at 2:06.41.

Angelo State rounded out the top-five with its second-consecutive week in fifth. Kami Norton led the Rams at the Texas Tech Open, posting the sixth-best long jump mark and 10th-best 60 hurdle time on the NCAA Division II Descending Order List this year.

Bellarmine rose to sixth from 11th in the rankings, thanks to a strong 4×400 relay performance at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic. The rest of the top-10 didn’t fare as well, though, as San Francisco State (seventh), Simon Fraser (eighth) Walsh (ninth) and UC-Colorado Springs (10th) all fell in the rankings.

Outside of the top-10, U-Mary made a nice push on the week, jumping from 28th to 13th on the heels of Alexis Zeis’ NCAA Division II leading 3000 performance of 9:31.84 (track size adjusted) at the Bison Open. The Marauders’ 4×400 relay squad also ran a track-converted time of 3:44.94, good for second on the Descending Order List.

American International made the biggest jump on the week, moving from 41st to 15th thanks to four top-10 NCAA Division II Descending Order List marks at the NEICAAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
