The Lady Buffs competed at the Home Depot Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and the Texas State Bobcat Invitational, posting top-10 NCAA Division II Descending Order List marks at both. Fatim Affessi led the way for West Texas A&M on the weekend, as the sophomore recorded the nation’s top long jump mark at the Texas Relays with a leap of 6.38m (20-9¼).
Angelo State returned to second after slipping to third a week ago. The Rams got solid performances out of Daisy Osakue in the discus and Kami Norton in the long jump and 400 hurdles at the Texas Relays. All three performances sit in the top-three of the NCAA Division II Descending Order List.
The Gorillas’ charge into the top-three was not surprising given the weekend it had at the Wendy’s/PSU Invitational. Courtney Nelson ran an NCAA Division II-leading 100 hurdles time of 13.47, while six other women notched top-10 Descending Order List marks.
Alaska Anchorage and Azusa Pacific also made positive gains in the top-10.
The Seawolves moved up 14 spots to fifth thanks in large part to Caroline Kurgat’s outing in the 10,000 at the Stanford Invitational. Racing against a “Who’s Who” of NCAA Division I All-Americans, the junior placed fifth, posting an NCAA Division II-leading 32:33.24 that doubles as an Automatic Qualifying Mark. Kurgat’s time was good for second in the NCAA Division II outdoor collegiate record books.
The Seawolves’ fifth-place ranking is tied for the program’s highest ranking.
Azusa Pacific had a small, but solid, leap in the rankings to sixth after sitting in eighth a week ago. The Cougars’ Eileen Stressling was highly productive at the Stanford Invitational, running a 34:25.31 in the 10,000 for an NCAA Division II Automatic Qualifying Mark.
