2019 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 3

NEW ORLEANS – Where exactly did the time go?

There is just under a month left in the indoor season, which means it’s time for the latest edition of the NJCAA National Indoor Track & Field Rating Index, released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday.

For the second consecutive week, the men from Cloud County (Kan.) CC and the women from Barton (Kan.) CC remained atop the nation in their respective rankings.

Keep checking back as more and more will change as we get ready for the 2019 NJCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships which take place March 1-2 in Pittsburg, Kansas on the campus of Pittsburg State University.

Men’s Story

Cloudy County (Kan.) was selected as the No. 1 team in the country for the second consecutive week after strong showings at the Fred Beile Track and Field Classic and the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational against a field that included collegiate athletes from all levels of the sport.

Top performers from this past weekend included Santino Kenyi (tops in the country in the 5000), Peter Ackah (No. 1 in long jump), Dennis Kiptoo (second in the 3000 and 5000) and Kyle Alcine (third in the high jump). In total 14 new marks from the weekend made the ratings.

The T-Birds scored 359.27 points in this edition of the ratings. It is the first time in program history the team has sat in the top spot for two straight weeks.

Remaining at No. 2 for the second straight week was Barton (Kan.) CC with 283.34 points.

The Cougars spent the past weekend at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational and saw top performances out of Davonte Burnett (fourth overall in the 200) and Kenroy Williams (fifth in the 600). The 4×400 relay also set the top time in the country at 3:11.48.

Advancing three spots was No. 3 South Plains (Texas) with 255.81 points after a weekend at the Charlie Thomas Invitational.

The Texas were led by Asani Hylton (second in the heptathlon), Andrew Bosquez (second in the mile), Bryson Deberry (third in the high jump) and Ryan Olguin (third in the pole vault). It was an excellent meet across all disciplines as 24 new marks were added to the index.

Dropping one spot was No. 4 Iowa Central CC after picking up 246.56 points. Top athletes of the weekend for the group was Awet Yohannes (third in the nation in the 3000) and Caden Fenchel (third in the shot put). Twenty-two new marks were added to the index this week.

Also falling one was No. 5 Coffeyville (Kan.) CC who registered 235.15 points. The Ravens were led by Miles Marhofer (second in the weight throw) and Devontae Armstead (sixth in the heptathlon) at the MSSU Lion Open & Multi.

Completing the top-10 was No. 6 Monroe (N.Y., 164.92 points), No. 7 Western Texas (145.20), No. 8 Colby (Kan.) CC (138.69), Vincennes (Ind., 97.92 points) and No. 10 Central Arizona (92.58).

Women’s Story

The top spot in the country went to Barton (Kan.) CC for the second week in a row after it recorded 324.96 points overall. The Cougars had a successful showing at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational this past weekend.

The group was led by top performers in Deborah Giffard (leads the country in the 60), T’Nia Riley (tops in the 200), Christal Mosley (second in the 400) and Cadeebra Calcote (fourth in the 800). Overall 15 performances made their way into this week’s updated index. 

It is the first time in program history that Barton has held the No. 1 ranking for consecutive weeks.

Slotting in at No. 2 was New Mexico JC with 295.45 points.

The Thunderbirds competed this past weekend at the Texas Tech Open and saw three athletes post some of the best times in the nation in their respective events. Victoria Villanueva now leads the country in the pole vault, Kristal Liburd is tops in the long jump and Kristal Liburd is second overall in the triple jump.

Next up was No. 3 Monroe (N.Y.) with 241.28 points. The Mustangs were off from competition this past weekend and will return to action with the Fastrack National Invitational on February 8 in Staten Island, New York.

Coming in at No. 4 was Iowa Central CC after it picked up 197.95 points. The team was split between the Ted Nelson Classic and the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational this past weekend. Top athletes for the Tritons included Lilian Busienei (second in the country in the 3000), Florance Uwajeneza (third in the 3000) and Maddie Schmoker (fourth in the weight throw).

The No. 5 spot belonged to Cloud County (Kan.) after it received 181.87 points. The T-Birds were at both the Fred Beile Track and Field Classic and the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational and were led by two tops times in the nation recorded at the meet. Grace Chinonyelum now leads the country in the triple jump while Jessica Williams is second overall in the high jump.

The entire top-five remained in their positions from the previous edition of the ratings.

Rounding out the rest of the top-10 was No. 6 Cowley (Kan., 170.30 points), No. 7 Central Arizona (154.23), No. 8 Iowa Western CC (152.14), No. 9 South Plains (Texas, 144.62) and No. 10 Western Texas (85.61).
