Taking Stock Of DMR Weekend

We told you that DMR Weekend would be historic.

You probably believed us based on what happened in the past.

But even we couldn’t fathom the impact it had on the all-time charts.

For starters, Oklahoma State’s men demolished the collegiate record on the same track that Oregon set it two years earlier. The Cowboy quartet of Fouad Messaoudi (2:49.49), DJ McArthur (46.82), Hafez Mahadi (1:47.27) and Ryan Schoppe (3:52.84) combined to get the baton around in 9:16.40, crushing the previous best of 9:19.42 established by Oregon in 2021.

Not only that, but Washington was hot on Oklahoma State’s heels. The Huskies finished runner-up in 9:16.65, also going under the previous record. Washington led through three legs with Joe Waskom, Daniel Gaik and Cass Elliott staking them to an advantage, yet Ryan Schoppe dropped a 3:52.84 anchor to edge Kieran Lumb’s 3:53.46 effort over the same 1600-meter distance.

The following day, North Carolina headlined five teams that went 9:21.20 or faster at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The Tar Heels won in 9:19.99, followed in order by Wisconsin (9:19.99), Villanova (9:20.44), Michigan (9:20.83) and BYU (9:21.18). What might be even more impressive is that those marks came in different sections.

Let’s take a look at the collegiate record book.

Who said the men had all the fun?

Washington’s women got the DMR party started two weeks earlier when they took down the six-year-old collegiate record of 10:48.77 set by Oregon with their 10:46.62 effort at the Scarlet and White Invitational in Boston. Sophie O’Sullivan (3:16.24), Marlena Preigh (54.21), Carley Thomas (2:01.93) and Anna Gibson (4:34.26) all toted the baton on the record-setting relay.

Fast forward two weeks and historic marks poured in across the nation. At the Arkansas Qualifier, multiple teams dipped under the 10:50 threshold for the first time in collegiate history with Oregon (10:49.07), Arkansas (10:49.14) and BYU (10:49.24) leading the charge. Then the following day, seven teams clocked sub-11:00 efforts led by Notre Dame in 10:50.41.

Again, let’s take a look at the collegiate record book (NOTE: The “after” lists include performances from Thursday night’s ACC Championships).
