Fiona Smith was named the National Women’s Track Athlete of the Year for the 2023 NCAA DIII Indoor Track & Field season. Smith, who hails from Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, completed the distance double at the 2023 NCAA DIII Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Birmingham, Alabama. She won the 5000 meters by more than seven seconds on Friday night with a time of 16:33.79 that ranks her fifth in meet history, before returning to the track on Saturday to capture the 3000-meter title in a meet-record 9:25.62. During the regular season, Smith scored 22.5 points at the MIAC Indoor Championships thanks to sweeping the distance events and helping Saint Benedict’s title-winning DMR squad.
