H.W. “Hi” Covey, USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame Special Inductee

In 31 years (1932-63) of coaching high school track & field in Iowa, H.W. “Hi” Covey’s teams won thirty-one district, thirty conference, five state cross country, nine state outdoor, and eight state indoor championships.

Covey was a four-year letter winner at William Penn University in football and track. He later spent 31 years as a high school track & field coach in Iowa, most notably at Ames High School. At Ames, Covey’s teams won 22 state championships in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field. Covey compiled an impressive 143-33 (.813) career dual record in track & field, and he also coached high school football and basketball.

For his achievements, Covey is honored in the Ames High School Hall of Fame, the William Penn University Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Iowa Association of Track Coaches Hall of Fame (the last as a charter member). Ames High School hosts the annual “Hi Covey Relays” in honor of their long-time coach, and Covey’s son, Bob, followed in his father’s footsteps as the track & field coach at Bakersfield College for 42 years.
