Celebrating A Century of NCAA Track & Field Championships

Martin Won Distance Titles For Two Programs

Francis (Frank) Martin made history twice in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

After winning the 2-mile in the 1944 meet as a Notre Dame sophomore, Martin transferred to NYU.

Martin returned to Marquette Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the 1945 meet and successfully defended his 2-mile title, thus becoming the first athlete in meet history to win championships for two different schools.

In 1946, Martin was back again for the NCAA 2-mile, which was held in Memorial Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The race became a duel between the two-time defending champ and Drake’s Fred Feiler, the first two-time NCAA cross country champion (1944-45). Martin’s finish proved decisive, giving him the victory by more than three seconds in 9:38.3 to become the meet’s first three-time winner in the event.

Martin’s points helped NYU to its best-ever showing as a team, claiming third with 40 points. The Violets had just two other scorers, Bernie Mayer and Irv Kintisch. Mayer won the shot over third-place Kintisch, who led a 2-3 NYU finish in the discus.

A week later Martin won the AAU national championships in the 5000 meters in 15:50.7.

The NCAA's First Championships

The NCAA and collegiate track & field will mark a momentous milestone in the spring of 2021 -- the 100th anniversary of the NCAA Championships and with that, the NCAA Track & Field Championships. In June 1921, the University of Chicago hosted the first track & field championships in NCAA history.

This point can’t be emphasized enough: Not only was the event the first for NCAA track & field, but the first championships for any sport under the sponsorship of the NCAA.

To celebrate, over each of the next 365 days, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) will celebrate moments, student-athletes, and coaches that have made a century’s worth of championships special. From humble beginnings to important historical milestones to the modern-day, collegiate track & field has evolved with the American society.

The 2021 edition of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin with preliminary round action on May 27-29 in Jacksonville, Fla., and College Station, Texas. The championships final site and culmination of the celebration is slated for June 9-12, 2021 at the newly rebuilt Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
