Celebrating A Century of NCAA Track & Field Championships

Gig ‘Em, Lindon: Victor Ruled The Decathlon

History only waited once when Lindon Victor competed in the decathlon as a collegian.

That was back in April of 2016 at the Mt. SAC Relays when Victor struggled mightily on Day 2 and finished second-to-last with 4942 points. He opened the second day with a strong mark in the 110 hurdles (15.00), but fouled out in the discus, no-heighted in the pole vault, fouled out in the javelin and did not finish the 1500.

Victor used that memory as fuel as he assaulted the record book over the next two years.

His next total was 8446 points at the 2016 SEC Championships for what was the fourth best performance in collegiate history (You’ll see in a moment why it is now sixth).

Then Victor won his first NCAA title with an 8379-point effort at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Not only was that the second largest total put up in meet history behind Ashton Eaton’s meet record of 8457, it also slotted in at No. 6 all-time.

Fast forward to the 2017 Texas Relays and Victor broke the collegiate record with 8472 points.

Six weeks later, Victor bettered his own collegiate best to 8539 points at the 2017 SEC Championships.

All signs pointed toward a potential meet record at Historic Hayward Field, but Victor ended up with 8390 points for what is still the second largest total in meet history.

The NCAA's First Championships

The NCAA and collegiate track & field will mark a momentous milestone in the spring of 2021 -- the 100th anniversary of the NCAA Championships and with that, the NCAA Track & Field Championships. In June 1921, the University of Chicago hosted the first track & field championships in NCAA history.

This point can’t be emphasized enough: Not only was the event the first for NCAA track & field, but the first championships for any sport under the sponsorship of the NCAA.

To celebrate, over each of the next 365 days, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) will celebrate moments, student-athletes, and coaches that have made a century’s worth of championships special. From humble beginnings to important historical milestones to the modern-day, collegiate track & field has evolved with the American society.

The 2021 edition of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin with preliminary round action on May 27-29 in Jacksonville, Fla., and College Station, Texas. The championships final site and culmination of the celebration is slated for June 9-12, 2021 at the newly rebuilt Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
