Celebrating A Century of NCAA Track & Field Championships

Iowa State’s Koll Rolled To 5K-10K Crowns

Lisa Koll of Iowa State displayed her dominance twice at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Koll (pronounced “Kole”) arrived in the best shape of her life, even faster than when she won the NCAA 10,000-meter crown in 2008 by almost a full minute.

But, this time, Koll would be doubling in the meet. That proved to be not a problem, even though it was her first time doing so.

Koll’s first part of the double was the 10K, and she put the hammer down with eight laps to go with a 66-second circuit that broke the race open. She cruised home to win by more than 20 seconds, with Cyclone teammate (and future NCAA champ) Betsy Saina completing the program’s only 1-2 finish in meet history.

Next up was the 5000 meters, and Koll desired the collegiate record – a perfect complement to her still-standing 10K CR of 31:08.07. Alas, the record was out of reach on this day, but her victory by 30.13 seconds remains the largest by any woman doubling back from the 10K.

Even though the 2010 NCAA meet was her final collegiate competition, she wasn’t done with racing fast. A month later she ran 14:55.74 for the 5k, which remains the fastest “all-dates” collegiate best.

1921-2021
The NCAA's First Championships

The NCAA and collegiate track & field will mark a momentous milestone in the spring of 2021 -- the 100th anniversary of the NCAA Championships and with that, the NCAA Track & Field Championships. In June 1921, the University of Chicago hosted the first track & field championships in NCAA history.

This point can’t be emphasized enough: Not only was the event the first for NCAA track & field, but the first championships for any sport under the sponsorship of the NCAA.

To celebrate, over each of the next 365 days, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) will celebrate moments, student-athletes, and coaches that have made a century’s worth of championships special. From humble beginnings to important historical milestones to the modern-day, collegiate track & field has evolved with the American society.

The 2021 edition of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin with preliminary round action on May 27-29 in Jacksonville, Fla., and College Station, Texas. The championships final site and culmination of the celebration is slated for June 9-12, 2021 at the newly rebuilt Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
