Inaugural “Build Your 7” Team Challenge (Fan Contest) FINAL RESULTS
NEW ORLEANS – NCAA Division I Cross Country’s national individual and team champions have been crowned. The last cononation of championships for DI? The winners of the inaugural "Build Your 7" Team Challenge fantasy game held by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Both the men’s and women’s competitions were incredibly close, with a tiebreaker necessary to determine the men’s winner and the women’s victor claiming the title by just one point.
The men’s teams "Flyin Grimms" and "Mountain West" both scored a mere 28 points, but it was "Flyin Grimms" that came out on top with the tiebreaker: guessing the margin of victory for the men’s team champion. The actual margin was 33 points: "Flyin Grimms" predicted 24 while "Mountain West" guessed 61.
Both teams’ top fives were identical: Edward Cheserek, Oregon; Futsum Zienesallassie, Northern Arizona; Maksim Korolev, Stanford; Ammar Moussa, Colorado; and Nate Jewkes, Southern Utah.
Perhaps most impressively, "Flyin Grimms only selected six runners (they took all three frontrunners, but only selected three of four pack runners).
As an aside, the top team that didn’t include national champion Edward Cheserek of Oregon was also the winner of the "Most Ironic" award: 110th-place "King Choke-serek."
No ties were needed in the women’s competition as team "Isaac’s Picks" scored 39 points to edge out the 40 points posted by user "Miller" and team "Team 2".
"Isaac’s Picks" ran with a top-five of national champion Kate Avery of Iona, Emma Bates of Boise State, Shelby Houlihan of Arizona State, Lindsay Clark of Michigan State, and Tansey Lystad of Portland.
The top two teams that didn’t include champion Avery were "RunSmart" and "The Beatdown Crew" with 45 and 46 points, respectively.
How about teams that went almost exclusively with all women from Michigan? "Team Michigan!!!" scored 60 points to tie for 108th behind Michigan State’s Leah O’Connor, Rachele Schulist, Lindsay Clark and Julia Otwell (as well as Iowa State’s Crystal Nelson), while [Go Green] "Go White" posted 62 points to finish 134th with those same four MSU runners and Houlihan of Arizona State.
The full scores can be found below. Thank you to everyone who participated!
