Wide-Open Races in NJCAA DI National Coaches’ Polls

NEW ORLEANS – The NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships are just three weekends away, and with only regional championships left on the schedule –most of which are this coming weekend – in the meantime it’s still anyone’s race.

The Iowa Central CC men and women remained atop the week four edition of the National Coaches’ Polls unveiled Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), but at this point they are far from unanimous favorites in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on November 14.

The defending national champion Triton men are one of four different teams that received first-place votes in their poll, while the ICCC women – winners of three of the past four NJCAA titles – were one of three first-place-vote-receiving squads for their gender.

Iowa Central’s men garnered seven of ten first-place votes, while the women collected six.

The men of No. 2 South Plains and No. 3 Central Arizona also received a first-place vote, as did No. 5 Louisburg College. No. 4 Paradise Valley CC rounded out the top five. Iowa Central, South Plains and Central Arizona have history dating back to last year as they finished first, third and second, respectively, with all three separated by only nine points, 62-68-71.

Women’s No. 2 Lansing CC earned three first-place nods, while No. 3 Central Arizona tallied one. Moving up four spots to No. 4 was defending national champion El Paso CC, with Pima CC checking in at No. 5.

Joining the men’s poll this week were No. 19 Mott CC, No. 20 Spartanburg Methodist College and No. 24 Indian Hills CC. New to the women’s poll were No. 24 Mott CC and No. 25 Ranger College.

The NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, November 14 at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
