Iowa Central CC sits atop the men’s rankings and is trailed by Butler (Kan.) CC and South Plains (Texas) – who is looking for its 11th-consectutive outdoor championship – while the women’s side is paced by Central Arizona, New Mexico JC and Iowa Central CC.

Iowa Central CC’s men’s squad finished 2nd at the outdoor championships a year ago, and are hoping to supplant South Plains (Texas) for supremacy at the NJCAA DI Outdoor level. Ranking 1st every week last year until the championships, the Tritons have had a nice start to this season, with its 4×800 relay team running the division’s fastest time (7:47.03) at the Emporia State Relays over the weekend. The Tritons also saw 7 top-3 performances out of individual athletes at the meet.
Butler (Kan.) CC’s ranking of 2nd is a new program-best and can be directly attributed to Andre Ewers and NJCAA Division I National Athlete of the Week Akeem Sirleaf. Ewers posted the top NJCAA Division I time in the 100 meters at the Cowley Tiger Invite last Saturday with a time of 10.25. Sirleaf followed that up with a blistering 20.90 in the 200 meters, good for 1st in NJCAA Division I this year as well as tying for the 2nd-best time in the country from this past weekend, regardless of division.
The Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays were good to the 10-time champion South Plains (Texas) men’s team, as William Watson (110 hurdles), Okeen Williams (400 hurdles) and Laquan Nairn (long jump) all posted the top mark in NJCAA Division I in their respective events at the meet.
Paradise Valley (Ariz.) CC and Barton (Kan.) CC round out the top-5 on the men’s side.
Central Arizona’s women’s team finds itself in familiar territory, having ranked 1st during the first three weeks of the 2016 campaign. Candesha Scott led the Vaqueras to its 21st-straight conference title at the ACCAC Championships with the NJCAA Division I top javelin mark of 47.55m (156-0).
Fresh off an indoor championship, New Mexico JC received NJCAA Division I leading performances from two athletes in Ester Gitahi (steeplechase) and Latavia Coombs (triple jump) at the Texas Relays.
Iowa Central CC’s women, who captured the outdoor title a year ago in Levelland, Texas, saw Annastacia Forrester post a 6.06m (19-10¾) in the high jump at the Emporia State Relays to lead all of NJCAA Division I.
South Plains (Texas) and Mesa (Ariz.) CC sit in 4th and 5th, respectively, in the women’s rankings.
The 2017 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held in Hutchinson, Kansas, on May 14-16. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org each week throughout the season for updated rankings.
