NEW ORLEANS — With a mere 3 days before the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bradenton, Florida, we now have a better look of what to expect when the teams are ready for competition with the newest batch of rankings, announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday.

On the men’s side of the rankings, it’s not terribly surprising that Ashland holds down the top spot heading into the championships. The Eagles have been in 1st place since the 7th week of rankings this season.
More importantly though is the fact that Jud Logan’s squad is tied for the most entrants into the national championships this week with 16, which should go a long way in helping Ashland land its 1st ever outdoor national title. Fans should keep an eye on the throws portion of the meet, where Ashland’s 9 entrants lead the way.
It won’t be a cakewalk for Ashland, though, as Chico State and Lincoln (Mo.) will be hot on the Eagles heels in Bradenton this week. The Wildcats are ranked 2nd once again, while Lincoln (Mo.) comes in again at 3rd.
While Chico State owns 14 entrants into this week’s meet, the Blue Tigers are actually tied with Ashland for the most with 16. Of those 16 entrants, an astounding 11 come in sprint and hurdles events, by far the largest chunk of entrants for any team in any discipline at the meet.

Of course, one cannot count out Saint Augustine’s, as the Falcons have captured the last 4-straight outdoor championships. The Falcons jumped to 4th in the rankings this week and possess 10 entrants for the national championships.
Shorter returned to the top-5 after slipping to 7th a week ago. The rise in the rankings comes despite the fact that the Eagles own the 2nd-fewest entries into the national championships by a top-10 team in the rankings with 9. That distinction belongs to Missouri Southern, who have 8 entrants and are ranked 8th.
Tiffin (6th), Adams State (7th), Texas A&M-Commerce (9th) and Grand Valley State (10th) round out the top-10. Each of those 4 teams have double-digit entrants into this week’s meet.
While Angelo State may be on the outside of the top-10 at 12th this week, the Rams could make a splash this week in Bradenton. With 11 entrants into the national championships, including the 2nd most combined events athletes of any team, the Rams will look to build on its 16th-place finish from a year ago.
The 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from May 25-27. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org throughout the week for updates.
