For the 1st time all season long, as well as the 1st time in program history, Pittsburg State’s women’s outdoor track & field squad is ranked 1st in the newest batch of outdoor team rankings, as released on Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). And with the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships starting in just 3 days, there was no better time to jump to the top of the list.
The Gorillas are heading to Bradenton, Florida this week looking to capture its 2nd-consecutive outdoor title after defeating Saint Augustine’s by a single point one year ago.
While Russ Jewett’s squad is in a position to do some serious damage this week, nothing is guaranteed in this sport. The Gorillas have 16 entrants into the national championship this week, ranking 3rd out of all of the teams competing.
Grand Valley State and Adams State actually own more entrants to the meet than the Gorillas with 19 and 17, respectively. The Grizzlies are ranked 3rd heading into the championships while the Lakers sit 7th.
In terms of team rankings, West Texas A&M are 2nd this week after having been in the driver’s seat since week 3. The Lady Buffs have 13 entries into the national championships, pacing NCAA Division II with a total of 7 jumps entries.

Rounding out the top-5 in the rankings are Chadron State – who jumped to 4th for the best ranking in program history – and Angelo State. The Rams actually have more entries into the national championships than the Eagles at 13 to 8.
Only 6 teams have double-digit entries into the national championships this week. While GVSU leads the way with 19 despite not being in the top-5 in the rankings, they aren’t the only one in that predicament. Chico State – who has 11 entries – is ranked 12th. San Francisco State and Shippensburg are right on the cusp of double-digit entries with 9 each. Those two programs are ranked 14th and 19th, respectively.
Rounding out the top-10 on the week were Western State (6th), Johnson C. Smith (8th), Humboldt State (9th) and Minnesota Duluth (10th). All 4 teams are tied with 7 entries each.
The 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from May 25-27. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org throughout the week for updates.
