NEW ORLEANS — For the 1st time this season, there is a new team atop the men’s NCAA Division II Outdoor Team Rankings.

Ashland made a 2-spot jump to dethrone Chico State from the top spot, according to rankings released on Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Chico State had been in 1st all year, followed by a large group of teams who jockeyed week in and week out for 2nd place.

But it was not until this week that the Wildcats saw itself slipping out of 1st, mostly due to the fact that the team did not compete this past weekend.

On the other hand, Ashland hosted a meet and benefitted greatly in the rankings from its results.  Jordan Crayon was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II National Athlete of the Week earlier in the day after a superb performance in the hammer throw. Crayon posted the top hammer throw in NCAA Division II this year at 69.87m (229-3), a mark that makes him the 6th-best performer in the history of the event during the NCAA Division II outdoor season. Another Eagle had a solid outing on the weekend in Myles Pringle. The sophomore’s 2.14m (7-0¼) mark in the high jump is good for 3rd on the descending order list.

A relatively quiet week for Adams State, who dropped to 3rd, also cost it a spot in the top-2. The Grizzlies only sent 4 athletes to the Hillsdale Relays over the weekend. This week marked the 1st time on the season that the Grizzlies dropped in the rankings after starting at 52nd during the 2nd week and moving up to 8th, 5th and 3rd over the next 3 weeks.

Shorter held strong at 4th this week, while Saint Augustine’s returned to the 5th spot after slipping to 6th a week ago. The Falcons’ got a descending order list leading mark out of Shawn Rowe in the 400 hurdles at the Penn Relays when he ran a 49.36.

Tiffin, Lincoln (Mo.), Missouri Southern, Grand Valley State and Angelo State rounded out the top-10.

Academy of Art made a 3-spot jump into 11th for its highest ranking in 3 weeks, thanks in large part to sprinter Mobolade Ajomale and hurdler Quinlan Wright. Ajomale ran the fastest 200 meter time in NCAA Division II this past weekend at the PacWest Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 20.67. Wright’s mark of 51.82 in the 400 hurdles in the same meet was good for 8th in the nation.

Fresno Pacific (15th) and Azusa Pacific (4th) also made jumps in the top-20, moving up 2 and 4 spots, respectively. Those rankings were the highest for each team since the preseason poll earlier this year.

Western Oregon also returned to the top-25 after falling to 28th a week ago.

The 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from May 25-27. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org each week throughout the season for updated rankings.
