2022 NJCAA Division I Cross Country Regional Awards

NEW ORLEANS – Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA DI Cross Country season were announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the conclusion of the season.

Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.

Men’s Athlete of the Year

ATLANTIC REGION — Karim Belmahdi — Monroe-New Rochelle (N.Y.)

Belmahdi, who hails from Chlef, Algeria, won the individual title at the Region XV Cross Country Championships in 26:33.2, which was a meet record. He also won the Golden Eagle Invitational in 24:47.8 and finished fifth at the JWU Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina.

CENTRAL REGION — Sanele Masondo — Colby (Kan.) CC

Masondo, who hails from Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, won the individual title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships in 23:31.6. He is undefeated this season, also taking top individual honors at three other meets, namely the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational and the Chile Pepper XC Festival.

MIDWEST REGION — Yared Kidane — Iowa Central CC

Kidane, who hails from Eskilstuna, Sweden, won the individual title at the Region XI Cross Country Championships in 24:54.2. He also posted a strong result at the Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational.

WEST REGION — Adams Biwott — El Paso (Texas) CC

Biwott won the individual title at the Region V Cross Country Championships in 23:31.8. He also took top individual honors at both the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational and the NMJC Cross Country Invitational II. 

Men’s Coach of the Year

ATLANTIC REGION — Doug Butler — Eastern Florida State

Butler coached Eastern Florida State to the team title at the Region VIII Cross Country Championships. The Titans scored 20 points to win the title by 15 points.

CENTRAL REGION — Brady Johnson — Colby (Kan.) CC

Johnson coached Colby (Kan.) CC to the team title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships. The Trojans scored 23 points to win the title by 42 points.

MIDWEST REGION — Dee Brown — Iowa Central CC

Brown coached Iowa Central CC to the team title at the Region XI Cross Country Championships. The Tritons scored 17 points to win the title by 40 points.

WEST REGION — Felix Hinojosa — El Paso (Texas) CC

Hinojosa coached El Paso (Texas) CC to the team title at the Region V Cross Country Championships. The Tejanos scored 37 points to win the title by 2 points.

Women’s Athlete of the Year

ATLANTIC REGION — Aaliyah Headley — Monroe-New Rochelle (N.Y.)

Headley, who hails from Guyana, won the individual title at the Region XV Cross Country Championships in 20:05.9. She also posted a strong result at the JWU Wildcat XC Classic.

CENTRAL REGION — Emily Diercks — Colby (Kan.) CC

Diercks, who hails from Hoxle, Kansas, won the individual title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships in 18:06.9. That was one of three consecutive meets that she won, which also included top individual honors at the Chile Pepper XC Festival and Trojan XC Invitational.

MIDWEST REGION — Mercy Biwott — Iowa Western CC

Biwott, who hails from Eldoret, Kenya, won the individual title at the Region XI Cross Country Championships in 18:04.2. She also posted strong results at the Gans Creek Classic (second) as well as the Platte River Rumble (fourth).

WEST REGION — Faith Nyathi — El Paso (Texas) CC

Nyathi won the individual title at the Region V Cross Country Championships in 17:51.5. She had runner-up finishes at both the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational and the NMJC Cross Country Invitational II.

Women’s Coach of the Year

ATLANTIC REGION — Shirvon Greene — Monroe-New Rochelle (N.Y.)

Greene coached Monroe-New Rochelle (N.Y.) to the team title at the Region XV Cross Country Championships. The Mustangs registered a perfect score of 15 points.

CENTRAL REGION — Justin Riggs — Hutchinson (Kan.) CC

Riggs coached Hutchinson (Kan.) CC to the team title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships. The Blue Dragons scored 54 points to win the title by eight points.

MIDWEST REGION — Dee Brown — Iowa Central CC

Brown coached Iowa Central CC to the team title at the Region XI Cross Country Championships. The Tritons scored 28 points to win the title by seven points.

WEST REGION — Jeff Becker — New Mexico JC

Becker coached New Mexico JC to the team title at the Region V Cross Country Championships. The T-Birds scored 25 points to win the title by 18 points.
