How Many States Hosted NCAA Cross Country Championships?

Cross country is (almost) back.

The first competitions are right around the corner.

  • NJCAA teams can get underway on August 21
  • NCAA Division I and NCAA Division III teams hit the course on August 29
  • NCAA Division II squads finally toe the line on September 4

While it might be a bit too early to look ahead to November, the fact that Missouri and South Carolina will host the NCAA DI and NCAA DIII Championships for the first time got us thinking:

How many states have hosted the NCAA Championships over the years?

We did some digging – here is what we found.

Eight different states have hosted all three NCAA Cross Country Championships at some point: Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington, and Wisconsin. As mentioned earlier, Missouri and South Carolina will officially join that select group this November.

  • The NCAA DI Championships have been held in six states that have not hosted either Division II or Division III: Arizona, Maryland, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming.
  • The NCAA Division II Championships have been held in four states that have not hosted Division I or Division III: California, Mississippi, Nebraska, and North Carolina.
  • The NCAA Division III Championships have only been held in one state that has not hosted Division I or Division II: Georgia.

It’s going to be a great season on the grass circuit.
