Ah, mid-September.

That means the cross country season is off and running.

That also means business is about to pick up in a big way.

Let’s find out what happened this weekend across the nation.

Roy Griak Invitational

California Baptist swept the team titles in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

The 16th-ranked Lancers put on a masterclass in racing during the men’s 8k. CBU methodically moved up the pack before dropping the hammer with 3k to go. The Lancers, who were led by Gabriel Guzman in fourth place, put all five scorers in the top 11 as they beat runner-up Wyoming by a score of 39-54.

CBU’s women left nothing to chance on Friday. The Lancers dominated the women’s 6k as they amassed just 25 points for the third smallest women’s winning total in meet history – and the fewest points scored by a women’s team champion since 2017 (San Francisco, 22). Helena Mees and Sarah Schiffman led the way for CBU as they both clocked identical 21:41.5 marks for third and fourth place, respectively.

DIII Pre-Nats

North Central (Ill.) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps captured the men’s and women’s titles at the DIII Pre-Nats meet on Saturday.

The sixth-ranked Cardinals, led by a 1-2 finish by BJ Sorg and Oscar Frontjes, held off a strong charge by runner-up and 17th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Sorg and Frontjes gave North Central (Ill.) three early points, which were needed, as the Stags sent four runners across the finish line before the Cardinals got their third. North Central (Ill.) went 16-17-23 with the rest of its scoring lineup to total 59 points, compared to CMS’s 63.

The sixth-ranked Athenas dominated the proceedings in South Carolina, putting six runners in the top ten and scoring just 22 points. Adriana Crabtree of Illinois Wesleyan won the individual title, but it was all CMS athletes after that with Riley Capuano, Sadie Drucker, Elle Marsyla, and Sara Wexler finishing second, third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
