National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 14 collegiate cross country athletes, when applicable (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions, the NAIA and the NJCAA).
Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs. Nominated athletes are noticed before those athletes found through searching TFRRS.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.
NCAA DIVISION I MEN – Rocky Hansen, Wake Forest
Junior | Hendersonville, North Carolina
Course records haven’t stood a chance with Rocky Hansen on the case.
The junior from Hendersonville, North Carolina, struck again this past weekend at the ACC Championships, and lowered the 8k record at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Hansen covered the grass circuit in 22:18.6, nearly 21 seconds ahead of Virginia standout Gary Martin after breaking away between 4k and 5k.
Just two weeks earlier, Hansen had shattered the all-time mark at Panorama Farms, while winning the Virginia-hosted invitational in 22:44.4.
This is the first time in program history that an athlete from Wake Forest has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season. An ACC male athlete has now been bestowed national weekly honors in five of the past six years.
NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN – Jane Hedengren, BYU
Freshman | Provo, Utah
It’s just not fair.
Jane Hedengren steamrolled the field for the second straight meet, this time at the Big 12 Championships in Lawrence, Kansas. The freshman from Provo, Utah, cruised to a 6k course record at Rim Rock Farm in 18:29.6 – nearly 45 seconds clear of runner-up Joy Naukot, who finished top 15 at last year’s NCAA Championships. Hedengren went through 5k in 15:20.3, a split fast enough to have won last year’s NCAA outdoor title on the track.
This is the second time this season that Hedengren has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week. Hedengren previously earned national weekly honors on October 20.
NCAA DIVISION III MEN – Mohammed Bati, Augsburg
Senior | Dodola, Ethiopia
Mohammed Bati’s stated goal at Augsburg is simple: “Win a national championship.”
If he keeps running like this, that might be inevitable.
The senior from Dodola, Ethiopia, captured his fourth consecutive MIAC title in dominant fashion, covering the 8k course in 24:32.7 – nearly 11 seconds faster than St. Olaf’s Kevin Turlington. Bati, last year’s top returning NCAA finisher, ran stride for stride with Turlington through 7k before surging away with a final 1k split of 2:47.
This is the second time this season that Bati has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week. Bati previously earned national weekly honors on September 22.
NCAA DIVISION III WOMEN – Audrey MacLean, Middlebury
Junior | Tiburon, California
Running solo doesn’t faze Audrey MacLean – especially when she’s leading (and eventually winning), as she has in three of her five races this season.
The junior’s most latest win came at the NESCAC Championships, where she pulled away to a 20:47.8 finish – nearly 18 seconds clear of the field. MacLean sat comfortably in the pack through 1.65k before opening up a near three-second lead at 2.6k and 20 seconds at 4.8k.
This is the second time this season that MacLean has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week. MacLean previously earned national weekly honors on October 20.
NAIA MEN – Isai Moran, Our Lady of the Lake (Texas)
Sophomore | El Paso, Texas
Isai Moran did some serious running this past weekend.
The sophomore from El Paso, Texas, dominated the Red River Athletic Conference Championships, winning the 8k in 24:07.3 – 34 seconds ahead of the field. Moran’s low stick also led Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) to its tenth team title in program history.
This is the first time in program history that an athlete from Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season.
NAIA WOMEN – Kristen Torres, Our Lady of the Lake (Texas)
Junior | San Antonio, Texas
Kristen Torres put a one on the board for Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at the Red River Athletic Conference Championships – and her teammates weren’t too far behind.
The junior from San Antonio, Texas, claimed individual honors in 21:54.7, more than 18 seconds faster than the field – which included five of her teammates in the top eight. Together, they scored just 18 points to secure the team title for the Saints.
This is the first time that a female athlete from Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season.
