Indiana Tech Teams Pace First NAIA Outdoor National Team Rankings
NEW ORLEANS — Last month the NAIA crowned its champions of indoor track & field in Johnson City, Tennessee.
|
Next month, the governing body will do the same in Gulf Shores, Alabama — but that will be for outdoor track & field.
Will those same teams that stood atop the podium indoors — Indiana Tech men and Wayland Baptist (Texas) women — rise to the moment outdoors?
According to the first National Team Computer Rankings released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the Warriors are projected to capture another title. The Jackrabbits have a bit more work to do in that department.
Indiana Tech is ranked No. 1 in the men’s rankings with 479.08 points. The Warriors own a healthy advantage over second-ranked Wiley (Texas), which tallied 370.02 points. Defending outdoor champ Concordia (Neb.) sits third with 302.67 points, while Wayland Baptist (Texas) and British Columbia round out the top-5.
Over in the women’s rankings, Indiana Tech houses the top-ranked team there, too. The Warriors have 457.65 points to their likeness, while two programs from Nebraska — Concordia and Doane — sit in second and third. The Masters (Calif.) is a distant fourth with Wiley (Texas) nabbing another top-5 rank for its program.
Wayland Baptist, the defending indoor and outdoor champ in women’s track & field, sits in 22nd place.
The NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held May 26-28 in Gulf Shores, Alabama at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.
