2020 NJCAA Women’s Indoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 1

NEW ORLEANS – The year’s first NJCAA Women’s Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index, which was released on Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), finds a top-5 with four familiar programs and one newcomer.

Here’s a fun fact: The top-4 teams you see below have combined to win each and every national title indoors since 2009. The No. 5 team is a program in its second year of existence and is located just an hour away from where the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held March 6-7 in Lynchburg, Virginia.

New Mexico JC sits at the top of the Week 1 rankings once again. The Thunderbirds are looking to repeat national champion honors they captured in 2017 and 2018. Flomena Asekol is a double national leader in the 1000 and the mile, but NMJC leads five other events as well – Demisha Roswell (60 hurdles), Rushellee Jones (high jump), Victoria Villanueva (pole vault), Susan Francis (long jump) and the 4 x 400 relay.

Iowa Central CC, who last won the national indoor title in 2016, follows at No. 2. The Tritons have a pair of national leaders in Elonora Curtabbi (3000) and Lea Grady (weight throw).

South Plains (Texas) comes it at No. 3, as the team leads the country in the 60 with Rosemary Chukwuma and the triple jump with Onaara Obamuwagun in the triple jump. The Texas last won the national team crown in 2015.

Defending champion Barton (Kan.) CC is at No. 4. The Cougars have a national leader in Fiona Richards (shot put) and also have the second-rated athlete in 200 and 400 (Christal Mosley), 60 hurdles (Yoveinny Mota) and triple jump (Annia Ashley).

Making their national ratings debut at No. 5 is Bryant & Stratton. The Cougars scored three points in last year’s nationals, and this year’s freshman-dominated squad has the nation’s fastest 4×800 team. Tamia Arnold, who was named National Athlete of the Week on December 10, is the country’s third-fastest in the 60 hurdles.

Rounding out the top-10 are No. 6 Cloud County (Kan.) CC, No. 7 Monroe-New Rochelle (N.Y.), No. 8 Iowa Western CC, No. 9 Butler (Kan.) CC and No. 10 Mesa (Ariz.) CC.

Be sure to check back next week as the National Rating Index will continue to shift ahead of the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
