Damon Martin, Adams State: 2022 NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year (Duane Vandenbusche Award)

Damon Martin guided Adams State to a familiar place in 2022 – the top of the podium at the NCAA DII Cross Country Championships. Martin, in his 35th year as head coach of the Grizzlies, led them to the team title in University Place, Washington, as they scored 75 points thanks to a quintet of All-America performances, headlined by Stephanie Cotter’s dominant individual title. This crown was Martin’s 20th of his career in women’s cross country, making him just the third coach in NCAA history with 20 or more titles a single sport, regardless of division. Earlier in the season, Martin led Adams State to top honors at the South Central Region Championships, the RMAC Cross Country Championships, the Highlander Invitational, the Ted Castaneda Classic, as well as the Joe I. Vigil Open.
