NEW ORLEANS – The awards just keep coming for the Arizona State women’s track and field team. The Sun Devils will have to find room in their trophy case for another award as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Arizona State the 2008 Division I Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year on Tuesday.
The Sun Devils won the NCAA Division I Indoor team championship in March, scoring 51 points to defend their 2007 team title. The win was the third NCAA Championship in a row for the ASU women’s track team, as they also won the 2007 NCAA Division I Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
The Sun Devils then set their sights on defending their outdoor title. Strong performances in the throwing events on the last day of the competition put ASU within reach of the title, but the thrilling team championship race came down to the last competition, the 4×400-meter relay. Arizona State put up a strong effort in the relay but fell just short of LSU, finishing second overall with 63 points.
Arizona State has a team cumulative grade-point average of 3.270. West Virginia University had the highest overall team GPA (3.580), followed closely by Lipscomb University (3.540), and Utah State University (3.500). Including Arizona State, 15 schools on the list finished in the top 25 at the Division I Indoor Championships, and 14 schools finished in the top 25 at the Division I Outdoor Championships.
121 Division I women’s track and field programs were recognized as 2008 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Teams. The Big 12 Conference, the Big East Conference, and the Big Ten Conference led all conferences with eight member schools each on the All-Academic team list.
The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements, with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the Division I Indoor and/or Outdoor National Championships and cumulative GPA.
To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 team cumulative grade-point average.
