Wartburg Knights turn in strong outing at Wartburg Relays
WAVERLY – Wartburg College picked up 15 individual event wins Friday, Jan. 16, at the inaugural Wartburg Relays.
The Knights, running in front of a large crowd that gathered at Hoover Fieldhouse and Track, won 12 women’s events and three men’s events in a five-school field that featured fellow Iowa Conference members Coe, Dubuque, Loras, and Simpson. Freshman sprinter Faith Burt of Cedar Falls, competing in her first collegiate meet, won the 60 meter dash in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 7.72 seconds as one of the highlights for the women’s squad, while the men claimed titles in the 4×800, distance medley and the sprint medley.
The remainder of the women’s individual event championships came in the form of a sweep of the six relay races and a title for sophomore Brittany Thomas of Kansas City, Kansas, in the 60 meter hurdles on the running side. Sophomore Brittany Melloy of Mount Pleasant captured the pentathlon, while sophomore Megan Baker of LeGrand won the triple jump, and freshmen Skye Morrison of Chicago, Ill., and Amber Axon of Fredericksburg were first in the long jump and high jump.
The Orange and Black return to the track by splitting their squads for the Iowa State Cyclone Open and Monmouth College of Illinois Midwest Invitational Saturday, Jan. 24.
