Southern Connecticut’s Women Finish 10th at Metro Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women’s track and field team grabbed a 10th place finish on Thursday afternoon at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y. The Owls were the only Division II team in the meet as they placed ahead of four Division I programs – Marist, Wagner, Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis (N.Y.). Southern had a total of seven top-10 finishes on the day.

Leading the way for the Owls in track events was sophomore Shaina Barr (Manchester, Conn.) with a sixth place finish in the 400 meter dash. She crossed the finish line in 58.91 seconds. Junior Kathleen Faltus (West Warwick, R.I.) and freshman Courtney Rechtiene (Shelton, Conn.) also participated in track events as they finished 10th and 11th respectively in the 5000m run with times of 20:38.39 and 21:03.04.

Senior Sasha Mathelier (Freeport, N.Y.) led the Owls with a second place finish in the pole vault with a vault of 3.65 meters. She also finished eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.55 meters.

Taking home fourth place finishes in field events were junior Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) and freshman Samantha Spindel (Brewster, N.Y.). Taylor claimed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.80 seconds and Spindle placed fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 11.32 meters.

Sophomore Alicia Gray (Colchester, Conn.) rounds out the top-10 finishes for the Owls as she took sixth in the pole vault with a leap of 2.90 meters.

Sophomore Courtni Walker (Uniondale, N.Y.) had a well-rounded day as she placed within the top-25 in three events. Her best result was an 11th place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 10.81 meters. She also placed 13th in the long jump with a jump of 5.17 meters followed by a 21st place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 26.74 seconds.

The Owls track and field squad returns to action on Friday, Feb. 6 for the Giegengack Invitational at Yale. The meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
