BOSTON – Texas Tech’s eight-time NCAA champion Sally Kipyego etched her name into the record books at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Saturday, as she set a new collegiate record of 8:48.77 in the 3000M.
Kipyego, the only collegian in the race, placed second to professional Kara Goucher by only two seconds. The time of 8:48.77 breaks the previous record of 8:49.28 held by Kim Smith of Providence set in 2004.
The senior set a personal-best, school-record and the time is a NCAA automatic mark, but due to NCAA rules the time will not qualify her for the NCAA Championships. Kipyego also holds the NCAA record of 31:25.45 in the outdoor 10,000M.
