WKU Sweeps Sun Belt Conference Championships

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – WKU started the final day of the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Track and Field Championships with a sweep of the relays and finished the day by taking home both the men’s and women’s conference championship titles.
WKU jumped on the board early in the running events by taking the 4×100 meter men’s and women’s relays. The Hilltopper men’s relay team finished with the 16th fastest time in the NCAA this season.
In the women’s 1500 meter relay Middle Tennessee’s Zamzam Sangau outkicked WKU’s Janet Jesang over the last 200 meters in winning by two seconds.
North Texas’ Lauren Wiggins top time of 13.40 in the 100 meter hurdles set a new conference championship record and Troy’s Leander McKenzie posted the top time in the Sun Belt Conference on the 2009 season in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.06.
Arkansas State’s Charmisha Morrow won the women’s 400 meters in a time of 53.92 and ULM’s Mychal Word captured the men’s event with a time of 46.68. The top three finishers in the men’s 400 meters all posted NCAA regional qualifying marks.
WKU’s Miaie Williams ran a 2009 Sun Belt season best in the 100 meters with a NCAA regional qualifying time of 11.57. In the men’s 100 meters Gavin Smellie posted a time of 10.29 seconds to win the event – all four of the top finishers posted NCAA regional qualifying times. Smellie’s time was the 12th best in the nation this season.
