NEW ORLEANSFor the second-straight year, the Grizzlies of Adams State College are the 2009 NCAA Division II USTFCCCA Men’s Cross Country Scholar Team of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday. The Scholar Team of the Year distinction goes to the program that earned All-Academic Team honors and placed the highest among the field at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

In November, Adams State swept NCAA Cross Country titles, capturing both men’s and women’s national crowns for the second-consecutive year. The Grizzlies easily defended their NCAA Central Region title with a score of 20 points in the fall, placing all seven runners in the top 15. The 20 points scored by the Grizzlies were the lowest point total at the Central Region meet since 2001, and the team’s 27-point margin of victory was also the largest margin of victory in regional competition since 2006. Adams State completed the fall 2009 semester with a 3.15 cumulative GPA as a team.

Northern State and Edinboro share honors as top GPA programs (3.54) among the 62 Division II men’s programs receiving USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.

Four of the top five team finishers from the NCAA Cross Country Championships earned the honor. In addition, regional champions from four of the eight NCAA regions claimed All-Academic honors.

The PSAC led all conferences with 11 teams placed on the All-Academic roll. The GLIAC was next with seven.

For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Championship and also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.
