Throwers Flores, Sitek Claim Division III Field Athlete of the Year Honors

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Thursday that Eric Flores of Cal Lutheran and Ellie Sitek of UW Oshkosh were named the National Field Athletes of the Year for Outdoor Track & Field in Division III as voted by the nation’s coaches.

NATIONAL MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Eric Flores, Cal Lutheran

Flores, a junior from Custer, S.D., set a new NCAA Championships record in winning his first NCAA title in the hammer throw. With a throw of 217-8 (66.35m), Flores reset the 2004 meet standard by over two feet. Flores also became Division III’s all-time performer in the event, recording a toss of 220-10 (67.31m) at the Cal State LA Last Chance meet. Flores also qualified for the NCAA Championships with the shot put.

Earlier in the season, Flores won SCIAC Athlete of the Year honors after winning the hammer and shot, and adding a runner-up discus showing, at the league meet.

NATIONAL FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Ellie Sitek, UW Oshkosh

A senior from Marinette, Wis., Sitek scored 18 points, and three USTFCCCA All-America honors, at the NCAA Championships. In addition, Sitek’s points led the charge for the Titans’ second-place national team finish.  Sitek claimed the NCAA crown in the discus for the second-consecutive season with a personal best throw of 166-1 (50.62m). The mark moved her into the all-time Division III top 10 in the event. Sitek would go on to add a national fourth-place finish in the hammer and a sixth-place showing in the shot..

Earlier in the season, Sitek marked 191-2 (58.28m) with the hammer at the Titan Invitational moving to No. 6 on the all-time Division III list in the event. At the WIAC Championships, Sitek scored 18 points to help the Titans to a second-place finish.
