Final Preparations Underway as Indiana State is Set to Host Pre-National Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Final preparations are under way at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center where Indiana State University will host the biggest collegiate cross country invitational of the season with the 2010 Pre-National Invitational this Saturday. Eighteen of the top 30 men’s cross country teams and 18 of the top 30 women’s cross country teams will be on hand this weekend along with many other schools that have either been ranked or received votes during the 2010 season.

Gates to the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, located east of the Terre Haute Airport, will open at 9 a.m. (ET) Saturday with the women’s 6,000 meter Blue race opening up the action at 11:00 a.m. (ET). That race will be followed by the women’s 6,000 meter White race at 11:35 a.m. (ET), the men’s 8,000 meter Blue race at 12:10 p.m. (ET), and the men’s 8,000 meter White race at 12:50 p.m. (ET). Rounding out the day’s events will be the women’s 6,000 meter open race at 1:30 p.m. (ET) and the men’s 8,000 meter open race at 2:05 p.m. (ET).

Top ranked Stanford heads four top 10 teams in the men’s competition. The Cardinals are joined by fourth ranked Colorado, fifth ranked Northern Arizona, and eighth ranked Portland out of the top 10 of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings. Four from the top 10 of the women’s rankings will also be on hand including third ranked Florida State, fifth ranked Georgetown, sixth ranked Arizona, and ninth ranked Colorado.

Over 1,600 runners will compete in the six races which will make for a full day of outstanding competition on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. This is the seventh straight year, and the eighth time in the last nine years that Indiana State has hosted the Pre-National Invitational. The Sycamores will host the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s National Cross Country Championships on Nov. 22.

The Pre-National Invitational is just one of several sporting events involving Indiana State teams that will occur this weekend. The Indiana State volleyball team host Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. Friday and Bradley at 7 p.m. Saturday while the soccer team entertains Drake at 7 p.m. Friday and Northern Iowa at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Sycamore football team will also be in action Saturday when they host Missouri State at 4 p.m.
