NEW ORLEANS – The men’s program at Adams State College and the women’s program and Grand Valley State University lead the USTFCCCA Division II Program of the Year Standings through the indoor track & field season. Adams State, the NCAA men’s cross country championship team in the fall, placed seventh at the recent NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. GVSU’s women have won the NCAA cross country and indoor track & field crowns so far in the 2010-2011 school year.

USTFCCCA Program of the Year: Current Standings (MEN | WOMEN) | Award History

The men’s race, with Adams State’s eight points (1st XC, 7th ITF) leading the way has NCAA indoor champion Abilene Christian and Colorado Mines sitting at second place. The Wildcats finished 15th at the cross country championships to add to their indoor crown for 16 points. Additionally, Colorado Mines placed fourth at the cross country meet and in a three-way tie for 11th at the indoor championships.

The men of Adams State are the two-time defending winners of the award. Abilene Christian finished second in the results in 2008-09.

Grand Valley State’s women with two national team titles in tow hold a perfect score of two points entering the outdoor track & field season. GVSU will be looking for their third-consecutive Program of the Year crown.

Adams State, who has twice in-a-row finished second to GVSU in the final tally, has six points and is in second place. Adams State finished third at both the NCAA cross country and indoor track & field championships. Western State finished as national runner-up in cross country and in a tie for ninth in the indoor final standings.

The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field champions in Division II will be determined May 26-28, in Turlock, Calif., home to Cal State Stanislaus.

The NCAA Division II Program of the Year Awards are awarded annually to the most outstanding cross country/track & field programs.  The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Division II Championships.

In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships.  Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Division II Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
