Defending Champs North Central (Ill.), Johns Hopkins Pace Division III Preseason Regional Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – It’s only fitting that the defending NCAA Division III Cross Country national champions sit atop their respective regions in the preseason Regional Team Rankings released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (UTSFCCCA) on Tuesday afternoon.

The North Central (Ill.) men, who return four of its seven runners from last year’s national meet including All-American Aron Sebhat, lead the way in the Midwest Region. Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Washington (Mo.) are next up.

The 2014 women’s champion Johns Hopkins also welcomes back five of its seven runners from NCAAs including three All Americans (Sophia Meehan, Tess Meehan and Bridget Gottlieb) and is first in the Mideast. Dickinson and Elizabethtown are second and third, respectively.

Regional Rankings Summary PDF | Division III XC Rankings Central

Parity reigns supreme in the women’s ranks as only five of the eight reigning regional champions stayed at No. 1 (Washington (Mo.) in the Midwest, Carleton in the Central, MIT in the New England, Emory in the South/Southeast and the aforementioned Johns Hopkins in the Mideast). SUNY Geneseo moved to the top of the Atlantic Region, dethroning St. Lawrence. Hope paces the Great Lakes Region and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is the team to beat in the West Region.

Outside of Amhert’s men ascending to the top of the New England Region, there isn’t much change to report in the men’s rankings. Reigning regional champions St. Lawrence (Atlantic), St. Olaf (Central), Wabash (Great Lakes), Emory (South/Southeast), Carnegie Mellon (Mideast) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (West) all begin the season ranked No. 1.

Perhaps the biggest movement in both polls belonged to that of the Mideast Region. Messiah’s men went from 12th to sixth, while Misericordia’s women jumped from 10th to sixth.

Saturday, November 14 will be a busy day across the nation as various courses will host the NCAA Division III Regional Championships. The national meet is Nov. 21 at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winnerconne, Wisconsin.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
