Second NCAA DI Women’s Regional Rankings Of Regular Season Revealed
NEW ORLEANS — Seven of the nine regions in NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country remained virtually untouched in the most recent Regional Rankings released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
But what about those other two: There are nine after all.
QUICK LINKS: Regional Rankings Summary PDF | Rankings Central | Men’s Rankings
Both the Great Lakes Region and the South Region saw its former No. 1 bite the dust and the No. 2 team in each region surge to the top of the rankings.
We’ll start in the Great Lakes where second-ranked Michigan leapfrogged former No. 1 Michigan State. The Wolverines, who are led by Erin Finn, are still floating on Cloud 9 after putting up a near-perfect score at the Sycamore Invitational hosted by Indiana State. The Spartans, though, are as close to No. 1 as one team can be, especially after leveling the competition at the Spartan Invitational (four of seven runners in top-6).
Don’t think this will be the only time they’ll swap the top spot this season. Michigan and Michigan State will race at least four (possibly five) times this season, starting this weekend at the Roy Griak Invitational. Those other three (possibly four) times would come at the EMU Fall Classic, the Big Ten Championships, the Great Lakes Regional and possible the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
Elsewhere, Vanderbilt usurped the top spot in the South Region from Mississippi State. That’s because of a head-to-head victory this past weekend at the Commodore Classic.
The Commodores (third) and Bulldogs (fourth) both finished behind Eastern Michigan (meet champion) and Ohio State (runner-up) in the team standings, but it’s the head-to-head matchup we’re concerned about. For Vanderbilt, it got a great run from Sara Tsai (sixth), while Mississippi State was led by Rhianwedd Price (11th).
Speaking of the Eagles and Buckeyes, they went from No. 5 and No. 7 in the Great Lakes Region to No. 4 and No. 5. Eastern Michigan won the Commodore Classic large in part due to the effort of Jordann McDermitt, who placed third overall.

NCAA Division I Regional Championships will be held around the country on Friday, November 11 with the return of the NCAA Championships to Terre Haute, Indiana, eight days later.
USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
