COLLEGIATE RECORD: Mu Goes 49.68 In 400 At NCAA DI West Preliminary Round

Athing Mu made her intentions clear entering the postseason.

The freshman sensation from Trenton, New Jersey, wanted to break Courtney Okolo’s five-year-old collegiate record of 49.71 in the Women’s 400 Meters and cement her legacy.

After coming up short on her home track by 0.13 seconds at the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships (49.84), Mu wouldn’t be denied two weeks later on the final day of the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round in front of the Aggie faithful.

Mu ripped one lap in 49.68 seconds, shaving 0.03 seconds off Okolo’s former all-time best. It also made Mu the fastest U20 woman in U.S. history.

Counting what she did at the SEC Outdoor Championships, Mu now has three of the top-7 marks in collegiate history in the one-lapper – No. 1 (49.68), No. 4 (49.84) and No. 7 (50.04).
