COLLEGIATE RECORD: Nuguse Solos 1500 All-Time Best

Competition?

Pacers?

Yared Nuguse didn’t need them.

Nuguse turned the track & field world on its head on Thursday night when he soloed a collegiate outdoor record of 3:34.68 in the Men’s 1500 Meters at the 2021 ACC Outdoor Championships.

Did we mention it was during the prelims, too?

Nuguse went through 300 meters in 41.46, more than one full second ahead of Humberto Freire of Florida State, who was runner-up at the time. When Nuguse covered 700 meters in 1:38.90, that lead had grown to more than five seconds. At the bell, Nuguse was up by nearly 10 seconds over Freire’s teammate Sam Field, who had taken over runner-up duties.

All Nuguse had to do was close it out. That’s exactly what he did with a 57.95 last lap to take down Josh Kerr’s collegiate record from 2018.
