Jim Santos was one of the first track & field coaches to experience success coaching both men and women, as the head coach at Cal State University East Bay (then Cal State Hayward).
Santos began his coaching career in 1967 as a high school coach in Chicago Heights, Illinois. In 1971, he was named the head coach of the women’s program at Cal State Hayward, and he took over as men’s coach in 1973. His teams won two national championships, with the women’s team winning the AIAW National Championships in 1972 and the men’s program winning the NCAA Division II National Championships in 1977, making him the first coach to win National Championship in both Men’s & Women’s Track & Field. Both times, he was selected as the National Coach of the Year. The CSUH women also won the California Collegiate Team championships in 1971 and 1972.
Santos was a member of the 1980 Olympic Coaching staff and an assistant coach for the 1983 Pan Am Games. He is a member of the Cal State University East Bay Athletics Hall of Fame, and he is the founder of the Navy Run Jump ‘n’ Throw Program.
