Charlie Thomas, USTFCCCA Class of 2005


Charlie Thomas was a fierce competitor and coach. He set a world record in the 440-yard relay during his competitive days before hanging up his spikes to coach the Texas A&M University cross country and track & field teams from 1959-1990.

During his tenure, he coached Texas A&M to five Southwest Conference (SWC) Championships and earned accolades as the 1989 SWC Coach of the Year. Thomas’ teams also achieved five top six finishes in NCAA competition.

He coached 22 NCAA individual champions during his coaching stint with Texas A&M, including world record holders Curtis Mills and Randy Matson. He also coached 121 SWC individual champions.

Thomas is a member of the Texas A&M Letterman’s Association Hall of Fame.
