DIII Cross Country Scholar Athletes of the Year Wintheiser & Regan Headline All-Academic Individuals

NEW ORLEANS—National champions Amy Regan and Grant Wintheiser added Division III Scholar Athlete of the Year awards to the national titles they captured in November. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country (USTFCCCA) announced the honors for the 2014 cross country season.

Regan of Stevens Institute and Wintheiser of St. Olaf earned their Scholar Athlete of the Year honors by being the best individual finishers at the 2014 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships with a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher.

A senior from Sartell, Minnesota, Wintheiser has a 3.98 GPA and is majoring in biology. He’s the first-ever Scholar Athlete of the Year from St. Olaf, but the third in the last nine years from the MIAC.

His female counterpart Regan is a junior from Green Brook, New Jersey with a 4.0 GPA; she’s studying Engineering Management.  This is the first time an athlete from Stevens has won the award.

Beyond the two Scholar Athletes of the Year, 325 women and 246 men in Division III earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors; honorees must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 and have finished in the top 25 percent of finishers at regionals.

Those honorees came from 100 men’s teams and 124 women’s teams.

Wintheiser’s St. Olaf squad led men’s programs with seven All-Academic Individuals, while three women’s teams were represented by seven honorees each: Calvin, Chicago and Williams.

Nine male athletes had a 4.0 GPA and qualified for the NCAA meet; eight women with a 4.0 ran at nationals.

The NEWMAC was the best-represented conference for both genders, with 35 men’s honorees and 34 women. The UAA had the next-most for the both genders with 21 men and 31 women.

Of the 35 All-American women, 24 earned All-Academic honors, while 26 of the top 35 men were All-Academic.
