Division III Cross Country Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year and Individual All-Academic Awards Announced
NEW ORLEANS – Mike LeDuc of Connecticut College has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2013 cross country season among 228 men who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.

LeDuc, the individual champion at the 2013 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, earned Scholar Athlete of the Year status as the best individual finisher at the NCAA Championships who earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.30.
The senior botany major from Canton, Conn, with a 3.78 GPA won his school’s first individual NCAA cross country title in Hanover, Ind., in a tight back-and-forth battle with John Crain of North Central (Ill.). After simultaneously passing the 7K mark of the 8K race with Crain, LeDuc was able to kick hard in the final quarter of a mile to win by four seconds with a time of 24:29.3.
|
After finishing fourth in his first race of the season, LeDuc was unbeatable in his final five races. Included in his winning streak were victories at the Pre-National Invitational, the NESCAC Championship and the New England Regional.
He is the first man from Connecticut College and the NESCAC to earn the award since it debuted in 2006.
LeDuc was one of 228 men in Division III who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for the 2013 cross country season. Honorees must have compiled a cumulative GPA or 3.30 or greater and must have finished among the top 25 percent of finishers at their respective regional championships.
Those 228 men hail from 98 different institutions and 35 different conferences. Three teams were represented by six All-Academic selections apiece in Williams, Washington (Mo.) and Wabash. Eleven more teams each had five student-athletes each earn the honor, including national team champion St. Olaf.
The NESCAC led the way in conference representation with 31 total honorees, followed closely by the UAA with 27 and the Centennial Conference with 17.
Eleven student-athletes reported 4.0 cumulative GPAs.
Of the 35 All-Americans, 23 earned All-Academic honors; as did 16 of the top 25 finishers.
