Colorado School of Mines and Grand Valley State earned the distinction of being Scholar Teams of the Year by being the highest-finishing team from their gender at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships to have at least a 3.0 cumulative team grade point average. Other teams to earn All-Academic team awards were programs who had a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and scored at an NCAA Division II regional meet during the season.
The Orediggers were the national runner-up this season behind the strong performances of four All-American runners. The team recorded 89 points, just 10 points behind eventual champion Grand Valley State in a tightly contested race. It was the first runner-up finish for the program since 2012 and the second overall in program history.
Colorado School of Mines also won team titles at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships and the Rock Pre-Nationals.
This is the second time that the Orediggers have been named Scholar Team of the Year, with the last being in 2015.
Grand Valley State waltzed away with the team title this past year as they recorded just 41 points behind five All-Americans. All of the scored Laker athletes finished in the top-26 of the race that included four in the top-nine.
To go with the national title, GVSU also won the Midwest Regional Title and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
The Lakers have now captured Scholar Team of the Year honors in six of the past nine seasons.
Overall there were 427 teams – 231 women’s teams and 196 men’s teams – that earned All-Academic honors.
