Division II Champs Grand Valley State Earn 2012 DII Cross Country Women’s Scholar Team of the Year Honors

NEW ORLEANS – The Lakers of Grand Valley State University are the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Women’s Scholar Team of the Year for the 2012 cross country season as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Grand Valley State University won the NCAA Cross Country Championship title this fall.

Scholar Teams of the year are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest as a team at the most recent NCAA Championships.

Cross Country Women’s Scholar Team of the Year – Grand Valley State University

Grand Valley State, coached by DII National Women’s Coach of the Year Jerry Baltes, have earned a 3.312 cumulative team grade point average through the fall of 2012.

The Lakers won their second NCAA cross country championship in three years in dramatic fashion, scoring 101 points to edge out runner-up and defending national champion Augustana (S.D.)’s 104 points and Adams State’s total of 109. Two GVSU runners finished among the top six in freshman Jessica Janecke (fourth) and sophomore Allyson Winchester (sixth), and sophomore Hannah Osborn finished 26th to give GVSU three USTFCCCA All-Americans.

In addition to their NCAA title, the Lakers continued streaks of dominance in both regional and conference competition. Including wins this season, the Baltes-led Lakers have won both the region and the GLIAC in each of his 12 seasons.

127 Teams Earn All-Academic Status

In addition to the Scholar Team of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced those Women’s teams who earned 2012 Division II All-Academic Cross Country status.

A total of 127 institutions represent 23 conferences that compose the group. The PSAC claimed 15 squads on the All-Academic list to lead all conferences. The Northeast-10 followed with 12.

King College reported the highest cumulative team GPA in the country for all divisions and genders through the fall 2012 semester at 3.819. Valdosta State followed at 3.77.

Eight of the top ten finishing teams at the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status. Of the 32 teams that participated in the national meet, 27 of those earned All-Academic status.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have compiled a team score at their respective NCAA regional championship.
