2019 NCAA DIII Indoor Track & Field Rating Index – Pre-Championships
NEW ORLEANS – Using only accepted entries to the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, we now have a good idea of what teams could end up on the podium following the conclusion of the meet on Saturday.
The Pre-Championships Edition of the National Rating Index projects the men from UW-La Crosse and the women from Washington (Mo.) to be crowned national champions in Boston. But there are a host of teams vying to stake their own claim to the throne.

The 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships get underway Friday at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.
Men’s Story
UW-La Crosse has been a juggernaut at NCAAs over the years. The Eagles have won 18 indoor titles in program history, 11 more than the second-most-decorated program (Lincoln (Pa.)) and 13 more than the second-most-decorated team still in NCAA DIII (North Central (Ill.)).
It definitely won’t be a lack of entries that would hold UW-La Crosse back this year. The Eagles bring 15 entries with them to NCAAs, the most out of any men’s team in the meet. UW-La Crosse has seven entries listed in the top-5 nationally and several right outside that realm.
North Central (Ill.), which fell from No. 1 to No. 2 between Week 6 and the Pre-Championships Edition, has 12 entries. Seven of those entries are in the distance events, while Peyton Piron and Luke Winder are expected to score major points for the Cardinals in the 400 and pole vault, respectively.
UW-Oshkosh has the second-most entries out of any men’s team with 13. The Titans held steady at No. 3 in the National Rating Index and should expect big performances out of Jonathan Wilburn in the triple jump and Ryan Powers in the 200 and 400.
UW-Platteville and Mount Union are projected to fight over the final podium spot. The Pioneers and the Purple Raiders are virtually tied in the National Rating Index, but UW-Platteville has the edge for the No. 4 spot based off a stronger batch of entries.
Women’s Story
Washington (Mo.) is looking for its second title in the past three years. The Bears last won in 2017, but finished in a fourth-place tie last year with Nebraska Wesleyan.
Look for WashU to have 10 entries in the meet, which is tied for the third-most out of any women’s program. The Bears, however, own four entries that are ranked in the top-2 nationally: Eka Jose is billed No. 1 in the triple jump and No. 2 in the long jump, while Heidi Nassos and Julia Dannebaum are ranked first and second, respectively, in the pole vault.
No. 2 Williams has the most entries out of any women’s program with 12. The Ephs, who are also looking for their second indoor title in program history, spread the wealth with their entries as they have athletes sprinkled across 10 events.
UW-La Crosse jumped into podium contention between Week 6 and the Pre-Championships Edition. The third-ranked Eagles have 11 entries, three of which are ranked in the top-5 nationally.
George Fox and Wheaton (Ill.) are also projected to battle for a podium spot as they’re ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
