2019 NJCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 3

NEW ORLEANS – Can you believe that the NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field postseason is already just around the corner?

To serve as one of the previews for the upcoming regional championships in just a few weeks, here is the latest edition of the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index which was released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association(USTFCCCA) on Wednesday.

For the second straight week a new (but familiar) program captured the top spot on the men’s side while the entire top-five of the women’s chart remained exactly the same from last week.

Expect much more changes to come as we advance through the end of the regular-season and through the upcoming regional championships. The 2019 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships is also on the horizon on May 16-18 in Hobbs, New Mexico.

The next NJCAA DI National Track & Field Rating Index will be released on Wednesday, April 24.

Retaking the top spot in the country for the second time this season was South Plains (Texas) after the program jumped up two spots following weekend competition at the NMJC Ross Black Open.

The Texans continued to add depth throughout their index with numerous new individual additions. The best of the bunch came from Holland Martin (now leads the nation in the long jump), Andrew Bosquez (fifth overall in the 10,000), Alex Kitum (sixth in the 10,000) and Yusuf Mohammed (12th in the 800).

Last week snapped a streak of eight consecutive weeks atop the National Rating Index for SPC that dated back to the beginning of the 2018 season as the program came in at the No. 3 spot. It didn’t take long for the Texans to jump back into the lead.

Dropping just a single spot to No. 2 was Barton (Kan.) CC.

The Cougars had the weekend off from competition due to the cancellation of the John McDonnell Invitational. The group will be back in action with the Michael Johnson Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

Also falling one spot was No. 3 Coffeyville (Kan.) CC after a weekend spent at the David Suenram Gorilla Classic.

The top individual performances added to the index from the meet came from Da’Jon Weston (12th in the country in the long jump) and Brandon Patterson (19th in the discus).

Holding steady in the No. 4 position was Iowa Central CC.

The Tritons are fresh off competition at the Musco Twilight, where they got top performances out of Tyler Lienau (third in the nation in the discus and fifth in the hammer), Caden Fenchel and Malachi Price (sixth and seventh in the same event), Corneille Logo (sixth in the javelin), Tyreck Newman (10th in the 110 hurdles and 12th in the 400 hurdles) and Akeem Bradshaw (10th in the long jump).

Remaining at No. 5 was Cloud County (Kan.) CC after a weekend at the Wichita State KT Woodman Classic.

Standouts from the meet included Tanner Brown (now second in the nation in the decathlon), Murphy Bavinga (eighth in the triple jump) and Saba Khvichava (10th in the 1500).

The rest of the top-10 was completed in the following order; Central Arizona, Hutchinson (Kan.) CC, Western Texas, Monroe (N.Y.), Butler (Kan.) CC.

There was a decent amount of change to the index overall as 17 of the top-25 experienced some kind of movement. Despite a new top-ranked team, the rest of the top-10 didn’t get affected much as four of those programs remained in their positions from last week.

Even with all the movement throughout the rest of the index, no team made a huge leap from the previous edition. Hinds (Miss.) CC (No. 12) and Colby (Kan.) CC (No. 16) tied for the largest improvement as each jumped up three spots. It was the best mark received in Colby CC history.

Only two teams ranked in the top-12 experienced any kind of change from the previous edition of the Women’s National Rating Index.

That means that the entire top-5 stayed put this week as New Mexico JC took the top prize for the third consecutive index to open the season.

The Thunderbirds hosted their NMJC Ross Black Open this past weekend where they were led by Monique Grant (leads the nation in the long jump and now 14th in the 100) and Demisha Roswell (second in the 110 hurdles).

Still at No. 2 was Barton (Kan.) CC after an off week from competition.

The Cougars return to the track and field with the Michael Johnson Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

Remaining in the No. 3 spot was South Plains (Texas) after a weekend away at the NMJC Ross Black Open.

The Texans got standout performances from Gladys Jemaiyo (now leads the nation in the 10,000), Dorcus Ewoi (fourth overall in the 800) and Ruth Osoro (fourth in the long jump).

Holding in the No. 4 spot was Central Arizona who found itself at the Triton Invitational this past weekend.

The Vaqueras got top showings from Devia Brown (leads the country in the discus), their 4×100 unit (ninth in the nation), Alliana Atencio (10th in the 5,000) and Janaya McIntosh (13th in the steeple) in taking on the field of NCAA DI athletes.

And rounding out the top-5 was No. 5 Iowa Central CC after the program competed at the Musco Twilight.

Top athletes from the meet included Lea Grady (fourth overall in the discus) and Winrose Chesang (seventh in the 1500).

Out of the top-12 programs only Monroe (N.Y.) and Cowley (Kan.) flipped-flopped in the No. 7-8 spots. Everyone else remained in their positions from the week before.

Only 10 of the top-25 programs experienced any type of change from the previous index. Of those teams No. 23 Dodge City (Kan.) CC (up seven spots), No. 13 Hinds (Miss.) CC (up four), No. 17 Iowa Western CC (up two), No. 14 Pima (Ariz.) CC (up one) and Monroe (N.Y) improved their standing.

The mark set a new program best for Dodge City CC, Hinds and Monroe.
