2019 NJCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 6

NEW ORLEANS – Regional weekend has come and gone and surprisingly didn’t affect the order too much in the latest edition of the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Wednesday.

The 2019 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships are just a week away as the nation battles for the top prizes from May 16-18 in Hobbs, New Mexico.

The next NJCAA DI National Track & Field Rating Index will be released on Wednesday, May 14. It will serve as the final preview for the upcoming national championships.

There wasn’t much change to be had Men’s National Rating Index as South Plains (Texas) held the top spot for the fourth consecutive week.

The Texans are fresh off weekend competition at the Texas Tech Masked Rider Open where they were led by Isaiah Griffith (tops the nation in the triple jump), Bryce Spencer (fourth in the discus) and Japhet Toroitich (tenth in the 800).

Dating back to the 2018 season, South Plains has been tabbed as the top team in the country for 11 of the past 12 releases of the National Rating Index.

Iowa Central CC held in the No. 2 position after winning the Region XI team title by a substantial margin. The Tritons had 14 individual regional champions at the meet and were paced by Olivier Soglohun (now fifth in the nation in the triple jump), Akeem Bradshaw (now sixth in the long jump) and throwers Tyler Lienau and Caden Fenchel who are now fifth and sixth in the nation, respectively, in the hammer. The program’s 4×100 unit is also now ranked fifth in the nation.

Cloud County (Kan.) CC remained in the No. 3 spot after winning the Region VI team title with a 171-point performance. The T-Birds had six individual event champions, with the best of the weekend going to 1500 runners Dais Malebana and Santino Kenyi who are now third and fourth in the nation, Kwanele Mthembu (fourth in the 10,000), Tanner Brown (fourth in the decathlon) and Lesley Mahlakoane.

Coffeyville (Kan.) CC was slotted once again in the No. 4 position after a third-place finish at the Region VI Championships. The group was led by its 4×100 squad which is now second in the nation and Maurice Moore (seventh overall in the hammer).

Barton (Kan.) CC came it at the No. 5 spot after it placed second at the Region VI Championships. The best performances from the program came from Dartez Hamlin (now third in the nation in the 200), Philipe Barnett (fourth in the hammer), Kevin Nedrick (fourth in the javelin), Nathan Hood (fifth in the 800) and Deshaun Jones (fifth in the 110H).

The rest of the top-10 was completed in the following order: Central Arizona, Western Texas, Hutchinson (Kan.) CC, Mesa (Ariz.) CC, Indian Hills (Iowa) CC.

The top eight teams in the country remained in their previous position from the last edition of the index. Overall, just 15 of the top-25 programs experienced any change from the week before.

Of those programs Mesa (Ariz.) CC, No. 16 Pratt (Kan.) CC and No. 25 Highland (Kan.) CC tied for the best improvement this week with a four-spot increase. The mark was the best received in school history for Highland CC as it was the first time the program has been ranked in the top-25.

The top of the Women’s National Rating Index didn’t change much as the top-3 teams in the country remained locked in place as Barton (Kan.) CC was the No. 1 team in the country for the third week in a row.

The Cougars won the Region VI team title over the weekend as they had eight individual event title winners. The best performances were had by Christal Mosley (now second in the nation in the 400 and seventh in the 200), Arianna Hayde (fourth in the heptathlon) and T’Nia Riley (sixth in the 200).

New Mexico JC remained locked in the No. 2 spot after weekend competition at the Texas Tech Masked Rider Open. They were led there by Demisha Roswell (now second in the nation in the 100H), Monique Grant (third in the same event), Machiyla Knight (fourth in the 400H) and Britnie Dixon (sixth in the 800).

South Plains (Texas) was locked once again in the No. 3 position after they were also at the Masked Rider Open. Top showings of the weekend were had by Janiel Moore (now fifth in the 400), Alyssa Hernandez (eighth in the 100H) and their now fifth-ranked 4×400 unit.

Iowa Central CC climbed up one spot in the rankings to No. 4 after a second-place finish at the Region XI Championships. The program saw top performances out of Eleonora Curtabbi (fourth in the steeple), Maddie Schmoker (sixth in the hammer) and its now ninth-ranked 4×100 unit.

Central Arizona dropped one to No. 5 despite winning the Region I team title. The Vaqueras had 11 regional title winners. The team added no new individual marks to the index with the title win, which shows how strong they have been this outdoor season.

The rest of the top-10 was rounded out in the following order: Cloud County (Kan.) CC, Western Texas, Monroe (NY), Kowley (Kan.) and Iowa Western CC.

The best leap by a top-25 program went to Iowa Western CC after a four-spot improvement. The second-best jump was a tie between No. 15 Pima (Ariz.) CC and No. 22 Hawkeye (Iowa) CC with a two-spot gain. That is the best ranking in program history for Hawkeye (Iowa) CC.

Overall, 17 of the top 25 teams programs experienced some kind of change from the week before.
