

2022 NJCAA Men’s Indoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 5
NEW ORLEANS – The top two programs might have remained the same, but seven teams found new positions in the top-10 of the Week 5 NJCAA Men’s Indoor Track & Field National Track & Field Ratings Index (TFRI), released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The TFRI serves as an objective means to compare programs solely of current marks from the 2022 indoor track & field season.

Continuing its season-long perch at No. 1 is South Plains (Texas), which improved in just about every manner measurable. The Texans have their highest point total and largest margin of the year as they increased their number of nation-leading events from six to seven while also upping the best tally of marks in the top-10 (27) and top-5 (14). Newest in the top spot for SPC is its 4×800 relay (7:28.79), giving the Texans a sweep of relay leads – they also lead the charts in the 4×400 (3:07.88) and distance medley (9:51.67). Four individuals also lead events, with National Athlete of the Week Thomas Nieto improving his mark three times in the pole vault, ultimately to 5.31m (17-5). Maintaining national leads are Kimar Farquharson in the 600 meters (1:17.65), Chevonne Hall in the 800 (1:50.57) and Kudakwashe Chadenga in the high jump (2.22m/7-3¼). The Texans also rate No. 2 in three events, with Chris Robinson earning two in the 400 (47.22) and 600 (1:17.79) and Justin Guy adding a runner-up position in the 60 hurdles (7.91).
Also improving its point total was No. 2 Iowa Western CC after winning the Region XI Indoor Championships. The Reivers increased their number of top-10 marks from 15 to 17, as two athletes rate No. 2 nationally – Yonas Mogos in the 1000 (2:25.60) and Nemoy Cockett in the weight throw (17.89m/58-8½). Mogos adds a No. 5 mark in the mile (4:10.03) and Michael Buchanan also has two top-5 marks – No. 3 in long jump (7.45m/24-5½) and No. 5 in the 60 hurdles (7.98) after winning both events at the Region XI Championships.
Moving back to No. 3 for the first time since Week 2 is Iowa Central CC, which increased its number of top-10 marks from eight to 11. The Tritons own the top mark in the triple jump from Martin Lamou (16.33m/53-7), with No. 3 in that event being held by Roman Kuleshov (15.41m/50-6¾). Kuleshov adds a No. 4 entry in the long jump at 7.40m (24-3½).
Indian Hills (Iowa) CC dropped one spot to No. 4. The Warriors have 15 top-10 marks, with double Region XI sprint champ Aurel Tchanbi contributing the highest individual mark at No. 2 in 200 (21.15). Indian Hills is also No. 2 in the 4×800 (7:40.51).
Barton (Kan.) CC joined top-5 for the first time since Week 1 with their highest ratings total of the year. The Cougars own the national lead in three events – 400 with Elijah Mosley (47.14), long jump with Shakwon Coke (7.82m/25-8) and shot put with Giovanni Gutierrez (17.81m/58-5¼). All three were Region VI champions this past weekend. Coke is also No. 3 in the triple jump at 15.41m/50-6¾.
Finishing the top-10 teams in the national TFRI are No. 6 Butler (Kan.) CC, No. 7 New Mexico JC, No. 8 Cloud County (Kan.) CC, No. 9 Coffeyville (Kan.) CC and No. 10 Monroe-New Rochelle (N.Y.).
There’s just one week left before the NJCAA Indoor Championships, scheduled for March 4-5 at Pittsburg State’s Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
