2022 NJCAA Division II Cross Country Regional Awards

NEW ORLEANS – Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA DII Cross Country season were announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the conclusion of the season.

Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.

Men’s Athlete of the Year

ATLANTIC REGION — Sebastian Hernandez — Daytona State (Fla.)

Hernandez, who hails from Wesley Chapel, Florida, won the individual title at the Region VIII Cross Country Championships in 25:34.5. He also added top-5 finishes at two other meets this season: the Saint Leo Abbey Invitational (second) and the VSU Cross Country Border Clash (third).

CENTRAL REGION — Devan Crow — Allen (Kan.) CC

Crow won the individual title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships in 25:16.9. He also posted top-10 finishes at both the Firestarter Classic (fifth) and the Missouri Southern Stampede (sixth).

GREAT LAKES REGION — Kyler Dean — Muskegon (Mich.) CC

Dean, who hails from Vicksburg, Michigan, won the individual title at the Region XII Cross Country Championships in 26:01.5.

MIDWEST REGION — Briar Nevills — Heartland (Ill.) CC

Nevills, who hails from Savannah, Illinois, won the individual title at the Region XXIV Cross Country Championships in 25:42.9. He also had a strong runner-up finish at the Titan Opener.

WEST REGION — Yotuel Garcia — Mesa (Ariz.) CC

Garcia, who hails from Mesa, Arizona, won the individual title at the Region I Cross Country Championships in 24:28.4. He also took top individual honors at the Vaquero CAMPY Invitational and the Mesa College XC Jamboree.

Men’s Coach of the Year

ATLANTIC REGION — Judy Wilson — Daytona State (Fla.)

Wilson coached Daytona State (Fla.) to the team title at the Region VIII Cross Country Championships. The Falcons scored 21 points to win the title by 32 points.

CENTRAL REGION — Josphat Boit — NorthWest Arkansas CC

Boit coached NorthWest Arkansas CC to the team title at the Region II Cross Country Championships. The Eagles scored 15 points to win the title by 44 points.

GREAT LAKES REGION — Jim Robinson — Lansing (Mich.) CC

Robinson coached Lansing (Mich.) CC to the team title at the Region XII Cross Country Championships. The Stars scored 29 points to win the title by 40 points.

MIDWEST REGION — Ty Wolf — Heartland (Ill.) CC

Wolf coached Heartland (Ill.) CC to the team title at the Region XXIV Cross Country Championships. The Hawks scored 15 points to win the title by 35 points.

WEST REGION — Dave Barney — Paradise Valley (Ariz.) CC

Barney coached Paradise Valley (Ariz.) CC to the team title at Region I Cross Country Championships. The Pumas 25 points to win the title by six points.

Women’s Athlete of the Year

ATLANTIC REGION — Shannon Jones — Daytona State (Fla.)

Jones, who hails from Maitland, Florida, won the individual title at the Region VIII Cross Country Championships in 19:25.7.

CENTRAL REGION — Aylin Vega — Wallace State (Ala.) CC

Vega, who hails from Fort Payne, Alabama, won the individual title at the Region XXII Cross Country Championships in 20:00.7. She also had a strong third-place finish at the Topper Trails College Classic.

GREAT LAKES REGION — Olivia Vanderwey — Lansing (Mich.) CC

Vanderwey, who hails from Mesa, Michigan, won the individual title at the Region XII Cross Country Championships in 19:10.8.

MIDWEST REGION — Aisha Ramone — Southeastern (Iowa) CC

Ramone, who hails from West Burlington, Iowa, won the individual title at the Region XI Cross Country Championships in 19:04.7. She finished top-10 in every meet in which she competed.

WEST REGION — Hayley Burns — Coconino (Ariz.) CC

Burns, who hails from Bozeman, Montana, won the individual title at the Region I Cross Country Championships in 18:03.7. She competed in four races this season and finished as the top JUCO runner in three of them. 

Women’s Coach of the Year

ATLANTIC REGION — Jackie (Wachtel) Waller — Pasco-Hernando (Fla.)

Waller coached Pasco-Hernando (Fla.) to the team title at the Region VIII Cross Country Championships. The Bobcats 31 points to win the title by 30 points.

CENTRAL REGION — Cameron Rieth — Cowley (Kan.)

Rieth coached Cowley (Kan.) to the team title at the Region VI Cross Country Championships. The Tigers scored 110 points as the top DII program, defeating several ranked DI teams.

GREAT LAKES REGION — Jim Robinson — Lansing (Mich.) CC

Robinson coached Lansing (Mich.) CC to the team title at the Region XII Cross Country Championships. The Stars scored 17 points to win the title by 48 points.

MIDWEST REGION — Ty Wolf — Heartland (Ill.) CC

Wolf coached Heartland (Ill.) CC to the team title at the Region XXIV Cross Country Championships. The Hawks scored 15 points to win the title by 35 points.

WEST REGION — Dan Pescador — Mesa (Ariz.) CC

Pescador coached Mesa (Ariz.) CC to the team title at the Region I Cross Country Championships. The Thunderbirds scored 20 points to win the title by 24 points.
